Mesoscale Discussion 1575
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0638 PM CDT Mon Jul 22 2019
Areas affected...the Colorado Front Range
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 222338Z - 230045Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Isolated severe storms are expected to continue through
the evening. No watch is expected.
DISCUSSION...Storms have developed in the vicinity of the surface
low/outflow boundary just south and east of Denver. A 69kt wind gust
was measured at the Denver airport at 2304Z. This gust was likely
brief and localized based on the radar observations of a core
collapse in that area. Given the steep low-level lapse rates, these
localized downbursts will continue to be possible as additional
strong thunderstorm cores collapse through the evening. The greatest
threat will likely be in Adams, Arapahoe, Elbert, and Douglas
counties for the next few hours.
Farther south, storms have mostly remained over the higher terrain,
but some convection is starting to drift off the higher terrain and
could impact areas such as Pueblo in the next 1 to 2 hours. The
primary threat with these storms will also be severe wind gusts.
