Mesoscale Discussion 1333
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0509 PM CDT Mon Jul 01 2019
Areas affected...southeast South Dakota and southern Minnesota
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 475...
Valid 012209Z - 020015Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 475
continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat for WW475 continues with damaging wind
gusts as the main threat. Large hail and a brief, weak tornado are
also possible.
DISCUSSION...Storms are developing and moving eastward from
southeast South Dakota through southern Minnesota. A remnant MCV
continues to track eastward helping to develop storms while daytime
heating in the warm sector and lifting from the warm front are
helping initiate storms as well. Storms will continue to track
eastward across southern Minnesota with new development likely
continuing in southeast Dakota.
A warm, moist airmass is in place with MLCAPE near 2000 J/kg across
the area per mesoanalysis. With about 35-40 knots of effective bulk
shear, a continuation of mixed mode convection is likely with the
possibility of isolated discrete, weaker supercells. Damaging wind
gusts remain the primary threat, but large hail and a brief, weak
tornado are also possible, especially with any discrete supercells
or near the MCV.
