Mesoscale Discussion 0968
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0541 PM CDT Mon Jun 03 2019
Areas affected...the southern Nebraska Panhandle
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 032241Z - 032345Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...5 percent
SUMMARY...A cluster of storms have lifted north of watch 321. While
severe weather is possible in the southern row of NE panhandle
counties, no additional watch is planned due to the limited area of
the threat.
DISCUSSION...The storm along the CO/WY/NE border currently has a
MESH core suggestive of ping pong ball sized hail and has recently
reported hail slightly larger than quarters. While the shear in this
area is relatively weak, (25-30 knots per CYS VWP), the storm is
moving toward an increasingly unstable airmass in a steep lapse rate
environment. Therefore, this storm will likely continue to pose a
threat for both large hail and damaging winds. In addition, the
storm has recently started to indicate low-level mesocyclone
strengthening over the past 15 minutes. The easterly low-level flow
has yielded over 200 m2/s2 of 0-1 SRH which would continue to
support some low-level rotation, however, high LCL's may act as a
limiting factor for tornado development.
While this storm and others within this cluster are expected to
maintain strong to severe intensity, the limited risk area outside
of the watch (3 counties in the southern NE panhandle), will likely
preclude the issuance of a new watch to cover the threat.
