Mesoscale Discussion 0847
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0744 AM CDT Tue May 28 2019
Areas affected...South-central Iowa
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 271...
Valid 281244Z - 281445Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 271
continues.
SUMMARY...An isolated severe threat will likely continue across
south-central into southeastern Iowa for a couple more hours this
morning. Wind damage and hail will be the primary threats.
DISCUSSION...The latest radar imagery shows a short line segment
extending southward from the vicinity of Des Moines to near the
Missouri-Iowa state-line. This feature is located to the north of a
quasi-stationary front extending west to east across northern
Missouri. The RAP is estimating MUCAPE values to the north of the
front in the 1200 to 1800 J/kg range. In addition, effective shear
is estimated near 45 kt which is likely being enhanced by a jet
streak near 700 mb centered on southeastern Iowa. As the line moves
eastward across southeastern Iowa over the next couple of hours,
wind damage will continue to be possible. Hail may also occur in the
strongest of cores.
