Mesoscale Discussion 0008
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0350 PM CST Thu Jan 04 2018
Areas affected...Down East ME
Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation
Valid 042150Z - 050245Z
SUMMARY...Heavy snow switching to freezing rain/sleet is possible
this evening with any on-shoring bands of precipitation.
DISCUSSION...The latest composite reflectivity mosaic shows new
bands of precipitation forming and moving northward toward the Down
East region of ME. As these bands move onshore there is uncertainty
in the dominant precipitation type that will occur. Surface
temperatures along/near the coast remain below freezing, and the
latest model guidance suggests this trend will continue. Meanwhile,
low-level warm air advection should also occur with the
approaching/deepening surface low, with the potential for 850-700mb
temperatures rising above freezing for a few hours this evening.
Should the conditions come to fruition, then a period of freezing
rain (with accumulations potentially exceeding 0.05") and sleet may
occur.
