Mesoscale Discussion 0007
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0206 PM CST Thu Jan 04 2018
Areas affected...Northern ME
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 042006Z - 050100Z
SUMMARY...Heavy snowfall rates in excess of 1"/hour will continue to
spread into portions of northern ME this afternoon and evening, with
higher snowfall rates of 2-3"/hour likely. This heavy snow will
combine with strong winds to produce blizzard conditions across the
region.
DISCUSSION...The latest composite radar imagery shows heavy snow
bands moving northward into portions of northern ME, associated with
mid-level frontogenetic forcing (see previous MCD #6). Heavy snow is
being reported at several stations across the region, and these
conditions should continue into the evening. The period of at least
1"/hour snowfall rates appears most likely between 20z-03z.
Low-level warm air advection associated with the
approaching/deepening surface low should lead to steepening
mid-level lapse rates, with the potential for enhanced vertical
motion and heavy snowfall rates of 2-3"/hour rates possible between
21z-00z.
