   Mesoscale Discussion 2040
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0930 PM CST Wed Dec 14 2022

Areas affected...Much of Wisconsin into western upper Michigan and
   northeastern Minnesota

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 150330Z - 150930Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow will develop and expand northward overnight
with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible.

DISCUSSION...To the east of a large upper low over the northern
Plains, a compact shortwave trough, visible on evening WV imagery,
was moving northward across IA/IL. Ahead of the shortwave, strong
dynamic lift was visible in an expanding stratiform precipitation
shield from northern IL and across much of southern WI. Surface
temperatures across much of WI are at or slightly above freezing
currently. Moderate to heavy precipitation should result in dynamic
cooling to near or just below freezing as early as 05z, supporting a
rapid change over from the current mix of rain/snow to all snow.
With strong height falls and weak upright instability, snow rates of
1 to 2 inches per hour are possible within any banded structures
able to develop. Snow should continue overnight expanding into
northern WI, western upper MI and northeast MN later tonight. Snow
will begin tapering off from southwest to northeast early tomorrow
   morning.
