Mesoscale Discussion 2058
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0552 AM CDT Wed Oct 09 2019
Areas affected...central through south central Montana into
northwest Wyoming
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 091052Z - 091445Z
SUMMARY...Areas of moderate to heavy snow should persist from
central through south central Montana into northwest Wyoming through
mid morning with rates up to or occasionally exceeding 1 inch per
hour.
DISCUSSION...The winter storm appears to be in the process of
reorganizing early this morning with a band of mid-level
frontogenetic forcing located from northwest WY into central MT
spreading very slowly southeast. Water vapor imagery indicates
primary zone of deeper forcing for ascent accompanying a progressive
shortwave trough is advancing eastward and coincides with band of
maximum frontogenetic forcing. Snowfall rates should be augmented
within this corridor of ascent through mid morning. Moreover, a
northerly post-frontal upslope component suggests snowfall rates
will probably be maximized along the northward facing slopes of the
mountains in northwest WY and southwest through south central MT
next few hours.
