Mesoscale Discussion 0647
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1256 AM CDT Fri May 17 2019
Areas affected...southwest Ohio into eastern Kentucky and West
Virginia
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 170556Z - 170830Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...A cluster of storms will likely persist tonight as it
moves out of Ohio and into eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.
Marginal hail or a locally gusty winds are expected
DISCUSSION...As of 06Z, a cluster of storms exists over northern IN
and western OH, in a zone of theta-e advection from the west. These
storms have been expanding in coverage overall, with sporadic small
hail cores. Given the orientation of winds aloft, this cluster is
likely to turn southeast as it continues into KY and WV. The western
fringe of this activity in closer proximity to the stronger
instability may be capable of occasional marginal hail. The boundary
layer will be relatively cool but if the cluster organizes, strong
wind gusts will be possible. Eastern portions of the system are
unlikely to pose any hazards, being farther away from the
instability source from the west.
