MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0518
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0610 PM CDT TUE MAY 11 2010
AREAS AFFECTED...NWRN TX...WRN/CNTRL OK
CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 151...
VALID 112310Z - 120045Z
THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 151 CONTINUES.
WARM FRONT/MOISTURE SURGE IS RETREATING ACROSS WRN/CNTRL OK AT
ROUGHLY 10-15KT AND CURRENTLY EXTENDS E-W JUST NORTH OF I-40. THIS
BOUNDARY SHOULD CONTINUE TO LIFT NWD DURING THE EVENING BECOMING
ORIENTED OVER SRN KS LATE AS LLJ INCREASES ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS IN
RESPONSE TO APPROACHING TROUGH.
SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT SUSTAINED DEEP CONVECTION HAVE BEEN
NOTED...PARTICULARLY OVER CLAY/JEFFERSON COUNTIES ALONG THE RED
RIVER...AND ALONG THE RETREATING MOISTURE SURGE OVER BECKHAM COUNTY.
THIS ACTIVITY HAS STRUGGLED...POSSIBLY DUE TO WEAK CAPPING.
HOWEVER...WITH STRENGTHENING LLJ JUST AFTER DARK THERE MAY BE A
MARKED INCREASE IN NEAR-SFC BASED ACTIVITY BEFORE CONVECTION BECOMES
MORE ELEVATED IN NATURE. ADDITIONAL STORMS MAY ALSO DEVELOP
DOWNSTREAM ALONG THE WARM FRONT ORIENTED ALONG I-44 INTO NERN OK.
WILL MONITOR THIS REGION AS WELL.
