# SPC Severe Weather Database Changelog 25 April 2023: * Initial release of the 2022 Database 11 July 2022: * Release of the 2021 Database 15 March 2022: * Release of the 2020 Tornado Database 26 January 2022: * Release of the 2020 Wind and Hail Database 04 January 2021: * Remove preliminary/incomplete 2020 data from master text files. * BUGFIX: Hail Data Change -- Changed the hail size of a 2019 hail report in Colorado (OM: 648193) from 5 inches to 4.83 inches based on an email exchange with the State Climatologist for Colorado. This change is important because this hail stone is the current state record holder for Colorado. PLEASE NOTE THAT IMPLEMENTING THIS FIX AND REPROCESSING THE DATA CAUSED THE ORDERING (AND SUBSEQUENTLY SOME OF THE OM NUMBERS) TO CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES. THIS WAS AN UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE AND I OFFER MY APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCES THIS CAUSES. * BUGFIX: Hail & Wind Data Change -- Changed a 125 knot wind report in Colorado on 20 May 1987 (OM: 562) to a 1.25 inch hail report at the same date and time. This change was precipitated by an email exchange with NCEI's Stuart Hinson and the Colorado State Climatologist. The wind report would be the state record for Colorado, however the text publication of Storm Data does not have mention of this wind report. Rather, the text entry holds a hail report of 1.25 inches, suggesting that this was a data entry error. There is no longer OM:562 in the wind file and correspondingly the new OM for the hail report is 99604. 31 December 2020: * Release of the 2019 Database * BUGFIX: Change injuries from 0 to 46 for the Lone Grove, OK, tornado on 2/10/2009. Requested by WFO Norman. 30 September 2019: * Release of the 2018 Database * BUGFIX: Tornado Data Change -- Changed the date of a 1965 tornado (OM: 618) from 6/27 to 6/21 based on email from Stuart Hinson at NCEI regarding Storm Data text indicating two tornadoes on 6/21 and only one listed. The tornado on 6/27 seems to fit the description of the missing tornado from 6/21. * BUGFIX: Update tornado on 04 October 2006 -- Based on email, this tornado (OM: 948) was mis-entered from StormData. Corrected to match StormData 21 December 2018: * FIX: Fixed bug that caused the 'dy' attribute to be excluded from the files. 04 December 2018: * FIX: Fixed bug that caused the wind column indicating measured/estimated to not be included in the shapefiles. 10 September 2018: * FIX: Emergency fix to correct incorrect time conversions to CST during Daylight Saving Time for some recent tornadoes * CHANGE: Changed start/end points and rating of Goshen, MA tornado on 25 February 2017 (per BOX PNS) * CHANGE: Changed duplicate tornado entry on 25 August 2017 into a two-county tornado (per coordination with HGX) * CHANGE: Changed duplicate tornado entry on 26 August 2017 into a two-county tornado (per coordination with HGX) * REVERT: Reverted OM back to five digit running count * ENHANCE: Create full-path and initial-point GIS files for tornado, wind, and hail * UPDATE: Updated the 2018 Preliminary data through 30 August. Please note that not all tornadoes between July and August have been added to Storm Data and therefore may not be included in this update. 03 July 2018: * Updated Release of the 2018 Severe Weather Database, including the finalized 2017 severe weather reports. * Reprocessed 2016 tornado, wind, and hail data * 'OM' numbers for 2016-2018 have been changed to the format: YYYY-NNNNN where YYYY is the 4-digit year and NNNNN is the five digit running count * This is the anticipated last release using the current CSV format. A new, more intuitive format is planned for 2019. Example files should be provided later this year. * Beginning with the 2016 data, loss values are in actual dollar amounts. This is consistent with what is reported by local NWS offices. * Updated the 2018 Preliminary data through 30 June. Please note that not all tornadoes between April and June have been added to Storm Data and therefore may not be included in this update. 11 April 2018: * Initial Release of the 2018 Severe Weather Database, including preliminary 2017 severe weather reports. 21 May 2017: * Fix issued with duplicate 2016 reports and with the date format for 2016 entries 15 May 2017: * Initial Release of the 2016 SPC Severe Weather Database I (Patrick Marsh) became SPC's 3rd Warning Coordination Meteorologist in late 2016. This means that the 2016 update to the SPC severe weather database is my first attempt at an update. There is a high likelihood that there will be mistakes. If you notice a mistake with the 2016 data, please email me at and I will try to fix the issue as quickly as possible. For errors prior to 2016, please let me know as well, and I'll look into the issue, although since I did not put together those data, it will take more time to resolve. Additionally, I am hoping to move from a once-a-year update to quarterly or even monthly updates. A consequence of this change will be the potential for additional tornadoes to be added in time periods previously covered by an update. I will attempt to document any changes in this changelog.
