   Mesoscale Discussion 0188
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0252 AM CST Fri Feb 25 2022

Areas affected...portions of northern NJ...Long Island and far
   southern NY...and coastal CT

   Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

   Valid 250852Z - 251245Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy freezing rain and sleet will continue
for a few more hours this morning across northern New Jersey,
portions of far southern NY and Long Island, and coastal CT.

DISCUSSION...Moderate to heavy sleet and freezing rain will persist
across the discussion area for a few more hours early this morning.
Surface temperatures are generally in the 29-32 F range with the
freezing line stretching from central NJ to the southern Long Island
coast. As the surface low positioned over western PA as of 0830z
lifts northeast and the midlevel shortwave trough continues to eject
northeast across the Great Lakes vicinity, strong low-level warm
advection will continue to spread northeast. Surface temperatures
are expected to increase above the freezing mark in the next few
hours. As this occurs, a transition from freezing rain and sleet to
rain is expected across Long Island by 7-8 am ET. Wintry mixed
precipitation may linger a bit longer (9-10 am ET) across parts of
northern NJ into far southern CT.
