   Mesoscale Discussion 0126
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0729 PM CST Thu Feb 03 2022

   Areas affected...Central New England

   Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

   Valid 040129Z - 040530Z

SUMMARY...A wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow will
continue across parts of central to western New England over the
   next several hours.

DISCUSSION...Latest 01Z surface observations show the freezing line
draped from northern PA, through southern NY, and into VT/NH. The
freezing line has crept south slowly over the past 2 hours in tandem
with the synoptic quasi-stationary boundary, and is expected to
continue to drag south through Friday morning. However, temperatures
ahead of the front have warmed slightly over the past hour, hinting
that the southward progression of the freezing line may be slower
than depicted by recent guidance. Regional radar mosaics show a
broad swath of precipitation moving northeastward into the region,
driven primarily by warm advection within a mid-level baroclinic
zone. This forcing is forecast to persist over the coming hours, and
given the persistent warm nose aloft (as sampled by the 00Z ALB
sounding and recently noted in CC data from KBGM), a wintry mix of
sleet and freezing rain will continue well into the night. Freezing
rain accumulation up to 0.1 inch per hour may be possible for
locations that linger in the narrow transition zone.
