   Mesoscale Discussion 1909
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0633 PM CST Sun Dec 25 2016

Areas affected...much of western and central ND into western SD

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 260033Z - 260630Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow and blizzard conditions will continue tonight
across western South Dakota into western and central ND.

DISCUSSION...Heavy snow, with rates near 1 in/hr and blizzard
conditions at times, will continue for several hours tonight on the
cold side of the northeastward advancing surface cyclone and
mid-to-upper level shortwave trough over the central Plains. Point
forecast soundings maintain a deep saturated vertical profile with
strong forcing for ascent associated with the northeastward ejecting
central Plains trough through at least 06z. During this time,
dendritic growth zone depth greater than 10 kft will be favorable
for efficient snow production and snowfall rates could exceed 1
in/hr for brief period. Furthermore, surface wind speeds will
increase in the 03-06z time frame from southwest to northeast across
the MCD area to around 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph
possible from western SD into central ND, creating blizzard
   conditions.
